Ancient and Fresh:

A Year with the Church Calendar and Lectionary

The church calendar is a way of ordering our year to reflect the life of Jesus and the story of God’s people. It includes seasons like Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, each with its own themes and focus.

What Is the Church Calendar?

Why Does This Matter for Us?

A Grounded Faith in a Chaotic World

The church calendar gives us a framework to slow down and focus on what truly matters: God’s story. It reorients us away from the hurried, consumer-driven calendar of the world and toward a life of rest, reflection, and purpose.

A Fuller Picture of Scripture

By following the lectionary, we’ll read passages from across the entire Bible, including parts we might otherwise skip. This ensures we hear the challenging, comforting, and surprising truths of God’s Word in their fullness.

An Invitation to Journey Together

We’re not doing this alone. Imagine reading and reflecting on the same Scriptures as millions of Christians around the world, in different countries and denominations. This is a powerful reminder that God’s Kingdom transcends borders, traditions, and time.

Here’s How You Can Join In…

Follow Along with Weekly Readings:
Read the lectionary passages before Sunday (available at https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/).

Sign Up to Be a Scripture Reader:
Sign up to read scripture before the sermon. It’s a meaningful way to serve, to actively participate in the worship gathering, and to connect with scripture intentionally.
